Driving the Transformation of the Global Automotive Industry

The automobile industry is going through a transformation that reaches far beyond the shift from petrol engines to electric vehicles. Cars are becoming connected platforms, software is becoming an increasingly important part of the ownership experience, and artificial intelligence is changing how vehicles are designed, built, and driven. At the same time, manufacturers must navigate changing customer expectations, supply chains, regulations, tariffs, and intense global competition.

Few leaders are carrying the responsibility of managing this transition at greater scale than Mary Barra, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors.

Barra became GM’s CEO in 2014 and was elected Chair of the company’s Board in 2016. Her career at the automaker, however, began decades earlier. She joined GM in 1980 as a co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division and went on to hold senior positions spanning engineering, manufacturing, human resources, product development, purchasing, and supply chain.

That long history inside the company gives her a perspective that is unusual among modern automotive leaders. She is not simply managing the transformation of an established automaker. She has spent much of her career inside the industry that she is now helping to reshape.

From the Factory Floor to the Corner Office

Barra’s connection with GM is also deeply personal. She grew up in suburban Detroit as the daughter of a GM factory worker. Her father began at the company as an apprentice and eventually became a journeyman die maker. In a recent conversation with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Barra described how her upbringing shaped her understanding of manufacturing, opportunity, and the people behind the products. That perspective has remained visible in her approach to leadership.

Barra has repeatedly highlighted employees, dealers, and suppliers as critical to GM’s performance. Rather than viewing technology as a replacement for the workforce, she has emphasised the importance of developing people alongside new technologies. GM says it has invested more than $250 million over the past five years in workforce training, including apprenticeships, veteran programmes, and education for factory workers.

For an industry facing rapid technological change, that balance between machines and people is becoming increasingly important.

Reimagining a Traditional Automaker

When Barra became CEO, GM was already confronting a changing automotive landscape. Since then, the company has invested heavily in electrification, software, connected services, advanced driver assistance, autonomous technology, and new manufacturing capabilities.

GM’s stated ambition is to help create a world with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion. The path toward that vision has not been straightforward. The market for electric vehicles has developed differently from early industry forecasts, while customer demand, government policies, battery costs, charging infrastructure, and competitive pressures have continued to change. Barra’s response has increasingly focused on flexibility rather than following a single technological path regardless of market conditions.

GM continues to invest in EVs while also working to reduce the costs associated with producing them. In its 2025 year-end update, the company said nearly 100,000 customers who bought GM EVs were new to the company and that it remained confident in its path toward EV profitability.

By the first half of 2026, GM reported that it was the second-largest EV seller in the United States and that its EV market share was growing. This suggests a more pragmatic approach to electrification: continue building the technology while responding to what customers actually want.

Turning Cars into Technology Platforms

Barra’s transformation agenda extends beyond the powertrain. Software is becoming an increasingly important source of differentiation in the automotive industry. Features such as connected services, digital interfaces, over-the-air updates, driver assistance, and subscription-based services can continue evolving long after a vehicle leaves the factory.

GM has been expanding this software ecosystem through technologies such as OnStar and Super Cruise. In 2026, the company reported its strongest quarter and first half ever for new Super Cruise-equipped vehicles.

The company is also pushing deeper into artificial intelligence. At its 2025 GM Forward event, Barra and her leadership team presented a vision in which AI, robotics, software, manufacturing, and vehicle technology converge. GM announced plans for conversational AI, a unified software platform, and eyes-off driving targeted for 2028, beginning with the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ.

The significance of this shift is considerable. The automobile is gradually becoming less like a finished mechanical product and more like an evolving technology platform.

Taking Autonomy Beyond the Robotaxi

Autonomous driving has become one of the industry’s most closely watched areas, but GM’s current approach is broader than the robotaxi race. The company is working toward bringing increasingly advanced automated driving capabilities to personal vehicles. In March 2026, GM began supervised public-road testing of its next-generation automated technology in California and Michigan. The programme involved more than 200 development vehicles, each with a trained driver capable of taking control. GM said its data-collection vehicles had already travelled more than one million miles across 34 states.

The company is taking an incremental approach. Rather than attempting to move immediately from driver assistance to complete autonomy, GM is building from technologies such as Super Cruise.

By August 2026, GM said nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles were already on the road. The company plans to introduce eyes-off capability in 2028, beginning with the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ.

For Barra, the opportunity is not simply to create a futuristic demonstration. It is to develop technology that can eventually reach millions of everyday drivers.

Balancing Innovation with Business Discipline

Perhaps the most important part of Barra’s current leadership is the need to balance transformation with financial discipline. GM remains a large manufacturing company with enormous capital requirements. It must fund new technologies while maintaining profitable vehicle programmes, managing supply chains, dealing with tariffs, and returning value to shareholders.

The company’s 2026 performance illustrates this balancing act. In the second quarter, GM reported an 8.6% adjusted EBIT margin in North America, reduced EV losses, lower warranty costs, and continued operating-efficiency improvements. The company also raised its full-year guidance for the second time.

At the same time, GM is reshaping its manufacturing and sourcing footprint. Barra has emphasised the importance of building a more efficient and resilient supply chain, with the company planning to onshore significant production to reduce exposure to tariffs. This combination of long-term technology investment and short-term operational discipline is central to her strategy.

Building a Broader Mobility and Energy Ecosystem

Barra’s vision for GM also reaches beyond the traditional automobile business. The company is exploring opportunities in software, insurance, defense, energy, and other technology-driven services. GM’s energy strategy, for example, uses battery technology and bidirectional charging to connect electric vehicles with homes and the wider electricity system. The company reported that nearly a quarter-million vehicles in the United States had been sold with bidirectional charging capability, allowing properly equipped homes to draw power from the vehicle during outages. This creates a different picture of what an automaker can become.

The vehicle remains at the centre, but surrounding it is an expanding ecosystem of software, energy, services, data, and intelligent technology.

A Leader Shaped by Change

Mary Barra’s career reflects the transformation she is now leading. She entered GM through a factory-based engineering programme when the automotive industry was overwhelmingly mechanical. Today, she leads a company investing in batteries, AI, software, autonomous driving, advanced manufacturing, and energy systems. Yet her leadership philosophy has retained one consistent element: people remain central to technological progress.

That may be one of the most important lessons from her tenure. Transformation does not happen simply because a company invests in new technology. It happens when technology, talent, manufacturing capability, customer needs, and business discipline move in the same direction.

GM’s journey is far from complete. The automotive industry will continue to face uncertainty around electrification, autonomy, artificial intelligence, trade, supply chains, and changing consumer preferences.

But under Barra’s leadership, General Motors is attempting to prepare for that uncertainty rather than wait for the future to arrive. Her challenge now is to turn decades of industrial experience into an advantage in a technology-driven era. If she succeeds, the transformation will not simply change the vehicles GM builds. It could redefine what an automotive company is capable of becoming.
